I am a licensed counselor doing a body oriented psychotherapy

In practice since 1991, I am licensed with the California Board of Behavioral Examiners as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I am also certified as a Guided Imagery practitioner and as a Somatic Experiencing practitioner.

I have a private practice in counseling, psychotherapy, and consultation. I work with individuals and couples and groups. My treatment is somatic based, working with the body as well as the mind, broadening the scope of traditional psychotherapy. Mental and emotional distress as well as certain physical symptoms and chronic pain syndromes stem from deep inside us. Stress, abuse, dysfunctional family dynamics, shocking and traumatic experiences effect us on the nervous system level, causing disregulation and imbalance in our system. This interferes with our ability to respond and cope, resulting in symptoms such as anxiety and depression, anger problems, chronic pain, and even physical illness such as chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. Post traumatic stress syndrome is the long-term result of an over-stressed nervous system. Working with body sensation, movement patterns, as well as emotions and thought patterns, we can access the nervous system to rebalance and regulate the system, resulting in alleviation of symptoms and greater health and well being. I also draw on my background in shamanic work, dream work, and guided imagery, interweaving these modalities with the somatic approach where appropriate.

"We often hold the tacit assumption that all of our suffering stems from events in the past.  But, whatever the initial seed of trauma, the deeper truth is that our suffering is more closely a result of how we deal with the effect that these past events have on us in the present."
Peter A. Levine, PhD.
In truth, while there are terrible ways to be opened, there is no such thing as a bad opening. It's all about ...the timing. Not open enough and we fester. Open too long and we become a wound.  Amazingly, if you speed up how a flower blooms, it appears to be escaping.  If you slow down the way a crisis explodes what we know, it appears we are transforming.  Hard as it is to embrace, crisies are flowers opening up what we refuse to open by ourselves."

TRAUMA FIRST AIDE (TFA©) is a mind-body intervention taught to stabilize the nervous system and reduce the symptoms of acute traumatic stress within a single treatment setting and/or emergency situation. We call our approach to working with trauma 'Trauma First Aide' because whether it was yesterday or decades ago since the experience occurred, we teach skills that can be applied to symptoms occurring here and now.
A 2-3 hour introductory presentation is available for groups as well as additional teaching modules.

-feeling on edge, irritable, trouble sleeping
-can't leave work at work, can't go home and relax

Many of these troubles are caused by an automatic reaction in your body to what's happening around you.  When you experience these symptoms, most likely your nervous system has become dysregulated by stress or trauma. A dysregulated nervous system becomes stuck in either a nervous/anxious state or in a depressed /numb state. A healthy nervous system responds to stress and then returns to equilibrium (normal functioning).  Trauma First Aide teaches basic skills to reduce the effects of stress and trauma on the nervous system and return it to equilibrium.  Trauma First Aide is based on current research in psychology, neurobiology, and endocrinology on how the brain and body respond to stressful and traumatic experiences, and how prolonged stress results in chronic illness.  Trauma First Aide will give you tools to regulate yourself, and to help stabilize others in crisis.
